The Frank Bold expert group is aiming for systemic changes in European energy.
Take a look at the measuresWe are working with Members of the European Parliament to prepare an amendment to the European Grids Package. We are striving to make recommendations for the effective use of current network capacities binding. Details can be found below.
The security and resilience of the European energy grid has become crucial for our future. We need to strengthen its robustness and expand its capacity, but this is both time-consuming and costly. Financial investments will inevitably be reflected in electricity prices. That is why it is essential to use existing capacity more efficiently. It is a smart and cost-effective solution. If our proposals were adopted, Member States would save up to €255 billion by 2040.
In 2025, the European Commission came up with an initiative to issue a comprehensive energy package that would strengthen independence and competitiveness. In the second half of the year, it opened public consultations on the European Grids Package (EGP). We participated in these consultations with our know-how from the Czech energy sector, joining dozens of corporations and organizations from across Europe that care about the future. In December, the European Commission published its draft package. It contains all of our proposals, but these are part of the non-binding Guidance on Efficient Grid Connections. From this point on, we are starting to work with MEPs across the political spectrum in an effort to push through an amendment that will move our proposed measures into the legally binding part of the package.
We want to contribute to changing the approach to European energy. We need an environment where the legal framework supports the efficient use of the existing grid and the rational development of new capacity. We also want to deepen cooperation between the expert sector and policy makers.
In the amendment, we propose to oblige distribution system operators to publish transparent data on the use of reserved grid capacity on an annual basis. Member States must then take specific corrective measures based on this data. By using the existing network more efficiently, Member States could save up to €255 billion in investments in new infrastructure, accelerate the connection of renewable sources and the electrification of industry, and reduce energy prices for consumers. Specifically, the situation can be addressed by a combination of the following seven measures:
